Wayther Motorcycle weather

Know the wind before you ride.

On a motorcycle the weather that matters is not the weather over your town. It is the crosswind on the ridge in ninety minutes, the shower that arrives twenty minutes before the pass, the fog on the descent once the light has gone. Wayther forecasts every point of your route for the exact hour you reach it, so you leave when the ride is good instead of when the app says it is dry outside.

What a rider reads

The four things that end a ride early

Every route forecast shows the same set of numbers. What changes on a motorcycle is which of them you look at first, and how soon it becomes a problem. Wayther puts all of them on one screen so the decision takes seconds rather than a tour of three weather apps.

  • Wind speed, direction and gusts at every point, so a headwind is distinguishable from a tailwind
  • Rain and visibility timed to your arrival, not to the clock on the wall
  • Temperature on the climbs, which is where a wet rider stops being comfortable
  • Daylight and night driving, with sunrise and sunset times on the route

Where it goes wrong

Three ways a motorcycle trip is lost to weather

These are not exotic. They are the three failures that turn a good day into a long, wet, cold ride home, and all three are visible on the route before you turn the key.

A crosswind you did not see

Gusts on an exposed ridge or an open coast road are the ones that matter, and they are not always in the town forecast at the bottom of the valley. Wayther shows speed, direction and gusts along the whole route, so the stretch where the wind is genuinely unpleasant is a specific set of miles rather than a general feeling.

Rain that starts just before the summit

Shallow low pressure over the hills turns a dry morning into a wet one by the time you reach the top, and the descent is where the temperature drops and the road cools. Timing the forecast to your arrival shows the shower sitting where it actually falls, which is usually not where you planned to be when you set off.

A dark ride you did not plan

An hour of delay at the start turns a daylight crossing into a night ride over unfamiliar roads, with the temperature on the way down. Wayther shows how much of the trip falls in the dark and where, with sunrise and sunset on the route, so the dark section is a number you chose rather than a surprise at dusk.

Planning a ride

Leave later, take the other road, or go tomorrow

This is the part a normal weather app cannot do at all. Set the route, set the departure, and the forecast is recalculated for the new arrival times: the shower slides off your miles, the headwind becomes a tailwind, the dark hours shrink. Move the departure far enough and the trip changes from bad to good, and you can see the exact moment it does.

When the timing cannot be fixed, Wayther offers the main alternative routes side by side, each with its own travel time, distance and forecast. Three ways over the pass, and one of them is dry. On a motorcycle that is often the whole decision: the scenic route is frequently also the sheltered one.

The route is planned for the mode you are actually travelling in. Set it to motorcycle and it plans the ride the way a motorcycle should be ridden rather than the way a car would take it.

Motorcycle weather FAQ

Questions riders ask

How is motorcycle weather different from a normal forecast?

A city forecast tells you what the sky is doing over your town now. On a bike, what matters is what the weather is doing at the mile you are on, an hour from now: a headwind over the next ridge, rain that starts twenty minutes before the pass, or fog on the descent when the light is already going. Wayther times the forecast to your arrival at each point of the route, so the number belongs to the stretch of road you are actually on.

Can Wayther tell me which way the wind is blowing?

Wind speed, direction and gusts are shown along the whole route. Direction is what makes it useful on a motorcycle: a crosswind off the sea on an exposed coast road is a completely different ride from the same speed blowing straight down the tarmac behind you, and only one of those is a fight for the next hour.

How do I find the best time to leave on a motorcycle?

Move the departure time and the whole route is recalculated for your new arrival times. Wayther shows where the rain sits, how much of the ride is in daylight, and what the temperature is doing on the climbs, so you can watch a shower move off your miles before you commit. The transport mode can be set to motorcycle so the route is planned the way that mode should be ridden.

Is Wayther useful for cycling as well as motorcycling?

Yes. Wind direction decides whether a day rides well or badly, and that is exactly what the route forecast shows. The bicycle mode plans the route for a bike rather than a car, and the same departure slider and timeline apply, so a 5am start in winter can be checked the night before.

How far ahead can I check the weather for a ride?

Wayther plans up to 10 days ahead, which is enough to read a long weekend ride a week out and watch the front coming. How far to trust it depends on the forecast itself: at ten days it is a general expectation, and by the last two days it is close to exact. That is where the departure slider earns its keep, because a shower that is a maybe on Monday is a mile-by-mile fact on Saturday morning.

Other ways to travel

Same route forecast, different vehicle

The weather along the route is the same whichever way you travel it. What changes is which of it you have to respect.

RV and trailer weather

Gusts on bridges and exposed ridges, icy passes, and the overnight temperature where you stop for the night.

Trucking weather

High-wind stretches for a high trailer, snow on the passes, and alternative routes that avoid a delay entirely.
