Wayther RV weather

Know the gusts before you pull out.

A tall vehicle on a high chassis feels the weather that a car never notices. The gust across an exposed coastal road, the frozen pass at seven in the morning, the temperature in the small hours at the site you stop at. Wayther forecasts every point of your route for the hour you actually reach it, so you know which ridges to take slowly, which passes to leave for daylight, and whether to move the stop an hour east.

What an RV driver reads

Weather you cannot outrun in a car

The forecast is the same one every driver gets. What changes in an RV is the consequence: a wider vehicle, more sail area, more weight to stop, and a living space that has to be comfortable at two in the morning. Wayther puts the numbers that matter for that on one screen, so the decision takes a minute rather than an afternoon of guessing.

  • Wind speed, direction and gusts at every point along the route
  • Extreme low temperatures flagged, timed to when you reach the overnight stop
  • Heavy precipitation and poor visibility on passes and exposed roads
  • Day and night driving, with sunrise and sunset marked on the route

Where it goes wrong

Three ways an RV trip is spoiled by weather

None of these is a surprise if you look at the route beforehand. All three are decided by weather at a particular hour, which is exactly the thing a town forecast cannot tell you.

A gust across exposed ground

Bridges over water, open coastal road and a ridge with a drop on both sides all accelerate wind in ways a valley forecast does not capture. Gusts are shown at every point of the route, so the stretches that need a slower hand on the wheel are a specific set of miles, and the alternative route that stays in the trees is right there beside it.

A pass that freezes before you reach it

The temperature at the summit is not the temperature you left home in, and it is not the temperature in the town at the foot of the hill either. Wayther times the forecast to your arrival, so you can see the summit at the hour you will be on it, compare it against the forecast a few hours either side, and choose a departure that gets you over in daylight and above freezing.

Cold at midnight at the site

The forecast for your destination is for the afternoon you arrive, which is the least useful number on an overnight stop. Wayther shows the temperature at the hour you will actually be sleeping there, and flags the extremes. An hour east, or a site in the lee of a hill, can be the difference between a cold night and a comfortable one.

Planning an RV trip

Shift the day and the route moves with it

Set the route, then move the departure. The whole forecast is recalculated for your new arrival times, so the cold night at the site becomes a warm one, the pass clears before you get to it, and the exposed coastal stretch lands in the middle of the day instead of the dark. You can see the hour it changes, which means the choice is a time rather than a hope.

When the timing is fixed — a ferry, an appointment, a booking you cannot move — Wayther lists the main alternative routes side by side, each with its own travel time, distance and forecast. On a long RV trip the lower road around the pass is frequently both calmer and only twenty minutes longer, and that is not a judgement call when you can see both.

Tell the app you are travelling in an RV and it plans the route the way that mode should be driven. The same forecast runs underneath: every point of the route, at the hour you reach it.

RV weather FAQ

Questions RV drivers ask

Why do gusts matter more in an RV than in a car?

A tall box on a high chassis reacts to gusts long before a low car feels anything, and the exposed ground that creates them is uneven: open coastal road, a bridge over water, a ridge with nothing either side of it. A gust that is a nuisance in a car is a hand on the wheel in an RV. Wayther shows wind speed, direction and gusts at every point along the route, so the exposed stretches are specific miles you can plan around rather than a general forecast for the region.

Can Wayther check the overnight temperature for an RV trip?

Yes, and it is one of the things most worth checking. The forecast is timed to your arrival at each point of the route, so the temperature shown for the stretch where you stop overnight is the one you will meet in the small hours, not the daytime figure for that town. Wayther also flags extreme low temperatures, which is what decides whether an unheated pitch in spring or autumn is a cold night or a comfortable one.

How do I plan an RV trip around a mountain pass in bad weather?

Put the route in, move the departure time and the forecast is recalculated for the hour you reach the summit rather than the hour you left home. Wayther shows the temperature on the climb, the conditions at the top and the weather on the far side, so you can see whether an early start gets you over before the snow arrives. If it does not, the alternative routes are listed side by side with their own travel time, distance and forecast, and the lower road is often the answer.

Does the route get planned for the vehicle I am driving?

Yes. Tell Wayther which mode you are travelling in and it plans the route the way that mode should be driven, whether that is an RV and trailer, a truck, a car, a motorcycle or a bicycle. The same forecast machinery runs underneath either way: every point of the route, timed to when you reach it.

How far ahead can I plan an RV trip?

Up to 10 days, which covers a trip booked weeks in advance as well as the weekend you are actually deciding about. A pass forecast is worth more the closer you are to it, so the useful pattern is to set the route early and then move the departure in the last couple of days, when the timing of the snow stops being an expectation and becomes a number you can act on.

Other ways to travel

Same route forecast, different vehicle

The weather along the route is the same whichever way you travel it. What changes is which of it you have to respect.

Motorcycle weather

Wind direction, rain timed to the mile, and the temperature where the climbs start.

Trucking weather

High-wind stretches for a high trailer, snow on the passes, and routes that avoid a delay.
